In a word – WOW!

It is very uncommon for a restaurant to have both exquisite food and an extraordinary atmosphere, one that almost takes your breath away. Tetsuya’s in Sydney, Australia is both, combining an upscale dining experience while surrounded by stunning beauty. To that end, the restaurant boasts utterly beautiful gardens that greet the customer at the entrance, and within a zen garden just outside the floor to ceiling windows.

Owned and operated by world-renowned chef Tetsuya Wakuda, this restaurant is unlike any other in the Sydney area. In fact, many travelers consider this establishment to be a bucket-list dining experience. Featured on-site is Wakuda’s own “test kitchen”, which enables him to not only evolve the menu but constantly create new, incredible dishes.

If the scenery isn’t enough to impress you, the food is. Tetsuya’s features a set, dégustation menu of 9 courses, all inspired by a mix of Japanese, Australian, and classic French cuisine. Wakuda uses the Japanese philosophy of working with natural seasonal flavors and enhancing them with classic French techniques and utilizing the freshest possible ingredients. While the 9 courses are relatively small in size, they each feature powerful flavor and beautiful presentation.

The restaurant is most famous for its signature dish, the Confit of Tasmanian Ocean Trout, commonly referred to as “the world’s most photographed dish”. Another favorite on the menu is the Spanner Crab with Bisque Custard and Burnt Onion Dashi.

It is without question that Tetsuya’s is a great place for dinner, but it is also a great place for dessert as 2 of the 9 courses are sweet treats. Currently, the menu features Petit Fours and a piece of Flourless Chocolate Cake, which is actually like a piece of heaven.

Supporting the magnificent flavors of each dinner is a wine course that is suited to complement each dish. Of course, such an experience and delectable food come at a high price. Be prepared to spend $230 AUD per person for the 9-course menu and another $125 AUD per person for the accompanying wines. While the price may seem incredibly steep (and let’s face it, it is), it is 100% worth every penny. From the atmosphere to the exquisite dishes to the world-class service, the price is beyond justified.
