REVIEW:Ah… Montego Bay, Jamaica. Travelers know this is the place for rest and relaxation. But it’s also a place of exploration and fun. So, when choosing a hotel destination, it is important to get it right – not only for comfort and cleanliness but also for convenience. And Sunscape Splash, situated on a private stretch of beach in Montego Bay could not be more convenient considering its proximity to Sangster International Airport, as well as attractions like the Aqua Sol Theme Park, Cromwell Gardens, the Craft Market, and the Hip Strip (a great area for shopping). Nearby historic sites include Catherine Hall and Bellefield Great House.
This gated resort, set on Montego Bay Marine Park beachfront, is a family-friendly destination, with popular wedding facilities included on the grounds. Though most travelers and critics would agree the property does not rank among the most modern or luxurious of resorts in Jamaica, it does offer much of the same thing that other all-inclusive destinations offer and does so more affordably.
Formerly the Seawind Hotel, guests will immediately note that the architectural design dates back to the early 80s, with its dual towers and overall layout that originally presented as a ‘hotel’ as opposed to the ‘resort experience’ now offered throughout the Caribbean. The look doesn’t quite mesh with some of the bigger corporate chain resorts of today; however, we think that Seawind and now Sunscape Splash have managed to nicely keep up thanks to ongoing renovations and upgrades that have expanded the property and have given it more of a resort atmosphere.
As for accommodations, there are 308 recently renovated rooms offering unforgetting views of your choice of the garden or Caribbean. Standard rooms are clean and comfortable, decorated in lively island hues and each unit has a balcony that oversees the beauty as well as the action of the grounds below. Rooms include LCD TVs, a coffee maker and minibar, free bottled water, complimentary toiletries, and free Wi-Fi access.
Though we found the rooms to be somewhat sparse in amenities compared to other properties in Jamaica, each unit is attractive and well maintained. If a standard room is too cramped for a family vacay, the resort conveniently offers Family Suites with bunk beds and more living space. Or, if guests would prefer an upgraded experience that includes an upgraded room, a select number of rooms fall under the heading of Sun Club, available for additional costs.
If the idea of a noisy waterpark and family environment gives travelers cause for concern, handily there is a neighboring sister property called Sunscape Cove which promises a quieter experience in a boutique-like setting. Only two floors high, the hotel is undoubtedly much smaller in scope, but it will provide a more relaxed atmosphere. Guests of Sunscape Cove are able to access all amenities and services associated with Sunscape Splash.
Sunscape Splash features an on-site waterpark for the kids, complete with a pirate ship and lazy river making this a highlight of the property, especially for families. There are four pools on-site; a business center; a spa offering manicures, pedicures, and deep tissue massage; a fitness center; dry cleaning and laundry service; and a beauty salon on the grounds.
As with most Caribbean resort experiences, the all-inclusive package at Sunscape Splash includes some on-site sports such as tennis and volleyball. And if you don’t mind paying for extras, scuba lessons are available as well as some motorized watersports.
For dining purposes, there is a standard buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus there are three à la carte restaurants to choose from, including a gorgeous upscale waterfront facility called Seaside Grill. There is a handy 24-hour cafe available to guests and multiple bars spread throughout the hotel and grounds. Depending on your mood and whether you feel like dressing casual or dressing up, there’s something to please just about everyone.
PROS:Reasonably priced. Property is clean, attractive and well-maintained. Rooms are comfortable, with the added bonus of having an additional building strictly for adults. Pools, water park, and beach are beautiful and clean.CONS:Notably slow elevators. Unpredictable buffet quality (sometimes quite good, others times merely passable). In all fairness, however, this is true for many all-inclusive Caribbean destinations.Everything considered; Sunscape Splash is a good resort choice in Montego Bay, particularly for families. To that end, it seems to score slightly better with families than with singles or couples who lean toward the sister property of Sunscape Cove. Together, the properties offer a reasonably priced all-inclusive vacation with lots to do and gorgeous views of the Caribbean.
