In a day and age of rapid urban sprawl, with Toronto having eaten away at farmland and the countryside and now Durham Region following suit, it’s hard to believe that not far from it all lies a 225-acre property lush with trails designed for nothing but enjoyment and tranquility.
Pathways on Pleasure Valley, located in Uxbridge, Ontario, brings new meaning to the word ‘relax’ with their 1 and 1.5-hour horseback trail rides through peaceful scenic forests. Your cares will be whisked away atop a beautiful beast and you will connect with nature the second you arrive on the farm.
Before a trail ride begins, participants receive a briefing with a 5-minute video concerning safety, including how to choose a helmet, how to get on and off the horse, and how to steer the horse. There isn’t a lot of information to retain but if guests do manage to forget something, staff is always there to help. After the video is complete, well-trained equestrian guides pick a horse that matches each rider’s body type (for example, a muscular man would not get the same horse as a petit young woman) and matches their skillset. A new rider will likely be paired with a veteran horse that is docile, knows to stay on the path, and doesn’t stop to eat grass. The comfort of riders is one of Pleasure Valley’s biggest priorities. The helpful staff assists riders onto the horse, they adjust the reigns, and double check to ensure that participants are content and confident on top of their respective horse.
**First-time riders be warned; despite how hard Pathways at Pleasure Valley tries to ensure your comfort, you likely will not be prepared for the feeling of a hard saddle and even a 1-hour trail ride will be enough to make your backside sore. Although you might be tempted to take 1.5-hour ride, it is not recommended.**
Riders leave the farm in a group of 2-8 with 2 tour guides, one in front as the guide and one behind in order to watch over the group in case someone encounters problems with controlling their horse. 9 times out of 10 however, there won’t be any trouble at all, as the horses at Pleasure Valley are well cared for and well trained. These beautiful creatures are happy doing what they do because it’s peaceful even for them. Not to mention that they are monitored to ensure they are never over-worked. Some of these horses grew up walking the trails so this is all they’ve ever known. Meanwhile, some of the others are retired racehorses so participating as a trail rider is a comfortable retirement.
Horseback riding is perfect for families, friends, and couples. The 1-2-hour trail rides will completely take your mind off of troubles as the scenery is mesmerizing. Between the trotting of hooves, the singing of birds, the rustle of leaves, and pecking of woodpeckers, you’ll quickly and easily connect with nature and find yourself totally immersed in your breathtaking surroundings. So the next time you feel the need to de-stress, head to Pathways for instant relaxation.
